North Korea | Bread and soy-milk for children

Bread and soy-milk for children

North Korea / Local & regional aid projects

On six days a week 11,000 children are currently receiving a meal of bread and a cup of soy milk. Enabling this are two AVC financed bakeries and a soy-milk factory. The children are going to 68 different nurseries, reception and primary schools, where they receive their meal.

Initial situation and challenges

Droughts. Floods. Embargo. Currently there are 11 million (45%) people malnourished and almost 20 million (80%) improperly nourished. The situation in North Korea is tense. The soil cannot be harvested and fertiliser is missing. Over 6 million people are at risk of starvation.

AVC humanitarian aid provides children with bread and soy-milk.

Aims

11,000 children in 68 nurseries, receptions and primary schools receive a meal six days a week.

Commitment

Bread and soy-milk
In December 2006 the AVC humanitarian aid officially inaugurated the first bakery, to which later on a soy factory was added. The bread and vitamin enriched soy-milk are given to children living in poor areas in the countryside. The food is distributed through an AVC humanitarian supported team, to make sure that it arrives where it needs to be. There is a visible change in the children both physically and mentally as they seem to be happier.

Recently another AVC humanitarian aid financed bakery assumed production, in an area usually inaccessible for foreigner and aid work.
