Aging worthily

Moldova / Local & regional aid projects

AVC humanitarian aid supports a home o run by a local partner so that elderly people who have been left alone can enjoy their old age with dignity. A special milestone is the lift, which could be installed thanks to generous donations.

Initial situation and challenges

Moldova is also referred to as the "poorhouse of Europe". The per capita income in this country is just CHF 200 per month, around 20 times less than in Switzerland. One of the most blatant signs of Moldova's poverty is the way people live there. Often people live far out in the country and thus far away from any civilization. There is neither electricity nor running water. As well, firewood for heating is scarce, while the temperatures in winter sink to -30°C. There is no possibility to get a job, and as to going to the next market with garden products, the way is too far and the road too catastrophic.

The country offers no prospects; those who can leave their homeland behind them. Children and seniors are left behind, completely on their own.

Commitment

In Moldova there are hardly any homes for the elderly, especially not those as we know them here in our country. Many senior citizens in Moldova have no one to help them. Making fires in winter, everyday care or eating become insurmountable challenges that often lead to tragic deaths from hunger and exposure.

For years, AVC humanitarian aid has been supporting a home for the elderly that meets a very high standard for Moldova. In particular, the newly installed lift in the building ensures previously unknown mobility and quality of life. For the future, the home for the elderly is to be extended by a new building which will enable 100 more people to be accommodated.
